Have you ever tried to set up a tent of a wooden platform? It can be quite difficult if you don’t have a free standing tent. However, there is a simple trick that you can use that will make it easy to set up a free standing tent on any platform. I just learned it and wanted to pass it along because it is so effective.
First off, all wooden platforms are not alike. On some, the boards are so tightly fitted that there’s no way to jam a tent stake between them. Some don’t have hooks on the side that you can tie your tent’s guylines to and others are elevated making it difficult to tie your guylines onto surrounding trees.
However, none of that has to matter anymore if you bring along a few screw-in eyes (shown here) or hooks with you. They weigh almost nothing and make it really easy to pitch a tent on any platform. When you screw one in, find a place in the platform surface where a board has started to split on the surface and drive in the screw there. Tie your guylines to the eyes or hooks and you are good to go. When you break down your tent in the morning, be sure to take your eyes or hooks with you for re-use at another platform. You can buy these at any hardware store.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackNot a bad idea, especially if there are a few existing holes around. Another option that MAY be lighter is cup hooks.
On the Overland Track in Tasmania there are often gaps between the planks with galvanised nails in the side of the board each 3-4″. It is easy to hook the fly ties over them. Sometimes I use a heavy duty elastic band or two to extend the fly tie.
