My friend Martin asked me sheepishly, “Is it really true that you bring stuffed animals on backpacking trips.” No, I replied. “They bring me.”

  1. Enjoyed that, Philip

See you in May , but with who? Matthew, Percival, Caesar…?

  2. Hah – it seems I’m not the only one!

  3. I’ve really enjoyed the site this last year…
    Great Work….

  4. Clearly, Matthew is your favorite. Thanks for a great year SH!

  5. I bet the poor animals all had to undergo surgery to have their bulky intestines replaced with lightweight cuben fiber batting? :) Merry Christmas!

  6. Best post ever!
    Merry Christmas to you too!!

  7. I’m not sure I’d want the extra weight, but those plushies sure add some softness to the scenery, not to mention make for a cuddly, comforting sleeping companion. I think I may just bring a small one on my next overnight. Merry Christmas!

  8. The look on the faces of the SAS, when you are on a joint patrol and break out the stufty is priceless. Just confirms their belief that all Americans are “bloody crazy”.

  9. How many of them have completed the 4000-footers?

  10. Love the post. Will have to forward it to a buddy who does the same thing. She will really get a kick out of it.

  11. Please contact me if you are ever in So Oregon in the next couple months. You have no idea what and where our menagerie has been. All of them were found ON HIKES to boot! Wish I could post a pic or two. There are some priceless ones. Great story.

  12. LOVE the plushies! They are adorable!

  13. Love it! I need to make sure I have them take me out backpacking more often. :)

  14. Love it! Wonderful photos. My wife and and I somehow justified not taking our plush elephant, Cecil, on our PCT trek. Upon returning and seeing your photos I’m not sure how we coped without him!

  15. Looking forward to many more blog posts and trip reports!
