Here is a great 2+ hour movie about hiking the Continental Divide Trail that illustrates more about the experience of hiking the CDT than any other movie or book I’ve seen on the topic. Distributed freely, no less.
Starring two UK hikers, Cookie (aka Simon Cook) and Paul, it chronicles their journey hiking from the US/Mexico border to Canada and the challenges, joys, and scenic wonders of their trip. There’s even a segment where they hook up with a CDT section hiker!
Despite being a National Scenic Trail, the 3100 mile CDT is only about 70% complete, a fact that makes hiking this “trail” that much more appealing to me. Because to complete it, you need to be a good off-trail navigator and hike cross country. If you pine for a true wilderness adventure in the United States, grab this one before they pave it over with a Walmart.
I saw movie this posted on my friend Uncle Tom’s blog: Tom is in training to hike the CDT in 2013 and I encourage you to follow his progress on his website and at Trail Journals. When he finishes the CDT, he will become a Triple Crowner, having already hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. I encourage you to check out his web site and help support him on his hike, if you can.
