Cookie’s Continental Divide Trail Movie

Here is a great 2+ hour movie about hiking the Continental Divide Trail that illustrates more about the experience of hiking the CDT than any other movie or book I’ve seen on the topic. Distributed freely, no less.

Starring two UK hikers, Cookie (aka Simon Cook) and Paul, it chronicles their journey hiking from the US/Mexico border to Canada and the challenges, joys, and scenic wonders of their trip. There’s even a segment where they hook up with a CDT section hiker!

Despite being a National Scenic Trail, the 3100 mile CDT is only about 70% complete, a fact that makes hiking this “trail” that much more appealing to me. Because to complete it, you need to be a good off-trail navigator and hike cross country. If you pine for a true wilderness adventure in the United States, grab this one before they pave it over with a Walmart.

I saw movie this posted on my friend Uncle Tom’s blog: Tom is in training to hike the CDT in 2013 and I encourage you to follow his progress on his website and at Trail Journals. When he finishes the CDT, he will become a Triple Crowner, having  already hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. I encourage you to check out his web site and help support him on his hike, if you can.

A terrific video. I know how I feel after hiking a full day. I just can’t imagine how anyone who hikes a trail like this or the AT feels like after finishing it. I have a lot of respect for anyone who has the physical and mental strength to do it. Great music. Thanks for posting.

Do you know of any more of these types of videos?

I have Wizards of the PCT on DVD. I’d pretty much watch anything similar to these types of trail docs.

Great movie. I wish they would have talked a little about their gear and some of the towns they went through but definitely worth watching.

Thank you so much for sharing Cookie’s video with us. It was such a pleasure to watch. I watched it this weekend and I can tell you it was the highlight of my weekend.

If you click on the Vimeo link above, it will bring you to all of Cookie’s videos. They are fantastic.

Philip, Thanks for the shout out. I had posted a link to this Vimeo gem on Facebook, and one of the local hikers here in Maine , Karl, noted that he has watched this particular video at least 30 times. I have already watched it 3 times and can’t wait to see it again. I actually missed some things the first two times that were very cool to uncover. On a practical level, the animated line that graphs out each section’s progress, and the miles in that section, along with the number of hiking days, has allowed me to fine tune my resupply plans.
