Gear Closet Raffle: MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes

Snowshoeing season is here and if you don’t already owns a pair of snowshoes or want to upgrade to an MSR snowshoe with a televator bar, this is your chance. This weekend, I am raffling off a pair of 22″ MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes, including a pair of extension tails (rated for 250 lbs).

Featuring the Speedlock Binding, the MSR Lightning Axis snowshoes are easy to put on and can be adjusted to accommodate toe-in or toe-out gaits, improving the efficiency of your stride (Watch the video above for details). In addition, the Lightning Axis Snowshoes come with wrap-around crampons built into the frame that provide excellent traction on snow, and televator bars which are a must-have if your want to climb snow covered hills and mountains. Televators flip up off the surface of the snowshoe and lock under your heel, relieving the muscle tension that burns out calves on steep ascents. I couldn’t climb half the mountains I hike in winter without them.

If I had these snowshoes, I could take with me the people who say,”I’d like to try snowshoeing…”

  2. Lerxst January 12, 2013 at 9:22 am #

I too would like these. I’m coming back from foot surgery and am just starting to be a winter hiker. These would help me with total snow domination.

  3. Len Beké January 12, 2013 at 10:04 am #

I want to win the snowshoes because I will be moving to Albuquerque for the next two years and I want to get up in the Sandías in winter to explore.

  4. Scott Barker January 12, 2013 at 10:16 am #

I am moving to the pacific nw and plan to add cross country skiing and snowshoeing to mt repertoire so I can more fully enjoy the region.

  5. portyhere January 12, 2013 at 12:49 pm #

To explore the snow covered Parkway!

  6. Mat January 12, 2013 at 2:06 pm #

We backpack as a family and I want to introduce my kids to snowshoeing. Having a pair will make it more likely that I will rent or buy sets for our family. We look forward to exploring the snow in Idaho!

  7. Jesse January 12, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

I would like these snowshoes to replace the ones recently stolen from my car while on a day hike.

  8. Chad Sell January 12, 2013 at 7:12 pm #

Never owned a pair and I would love to explore Crater Lake in the winter.

  9. Ben Carlson January 12, 2013 at 8:31 pm #

I got a pair of snowshoes for Christmas but I’d love to win these so my wife could come with me!

  10. Cody Bartz January 12, 2013 at 10:33 pm #

I have never owned a pair of snowshoes before. I have only used a pair one time before and I loved it! I want to spend more time outside and more time in the snow. I live in northern Minnesota and have access to the North country Trail and the Superior Hiking Trail. To walk on snow is a beautiful thing.

  11. Ashley F. January 12, 2013 at 11:31 pm #

I am a novice hiker with lots of motivation to expand my three season experience into the winter. Snowshoeing is something that I am especially interested in participating more in, and want to win these snowshoes so I can practice and get out there snowshoeing more frequently. I have rented a few times but would love to own a pair for myself!

  12. Lavinia S. January 12, 2013 at 11:51 pm #

I would like to win these snowshoes in order to be able to get out in the snow more often. This year my goal is to become a more experienced hiker, especially in the winter. Having snowshoes would mean that I could go out even if there is deep snow.

  13. Benjamin Moryson (@hrXXLight) January 13, 2013 at 5:14 am #

My snowshoes are broken on my last trip and now I need new ones.

  14. Maurik D January 13, 2013 at 7:41 am #

Fortunately I don’t need snowshoes, but I would like to do something back for other people who really need it more or who could use a break in life.

if I would get the shoes I would donate it to an organisation involved with children cancer.

  15. Justin January 13, 2013 at 8:45 am #

I go snow hiking but I dot have a pair of snow shoes.

  16. wil colquhoun January 13, 2013 at 9:08 am #

Definitely need snowshoes if it ever begins to snow in Maryland since it is 70 degrees on January 13th that is not looking likely.

  17. Chris DeMasi January 13, 2013 at 10:22 am #

I would love to have these snowshoes because they are something I’ve wanted for a long time. However, being a cash-strapped college students has forced me to put purchasing them on the backburner. Without snowshoes, I have been forced to bareboot when possible, to skip going out in conditions that I cannot manage without snowshoes. I would love to take these up to the White Mountains in NH, Greens in VT, or the Blue Ridge in VA and NC on the occasional heavy snowfall. Thanks for the chance to enter!

  18. Rog January 13, 2013 at 10:22 am #

The beginning of this season instead of getting me a good set of snowshoes that I have been needing for a long time, I purchased some gear to get my little brother into hiking, he has done AMC WHP and a couple hikes, so he is hook into the sport and most likely I’ll have a partner from now on.

  19. Kimberly Ciesla January 13, 2013 at 11:03 am #

I would love to win these Snowshoes because I am an outdoors loving girl, born and raised in Northern Michigan! I enjoy living the healthy outdoors lifestyle, but sadly have never had the benefit of owning a pair of Snowshoes! I love to go out on hikes with my hubby and our yellow lab Bear, exploring and taking photos of our beautiful area and sharing my photos with family, friends and my social network circles. I especially love quality, durable, rugged outdoors gear to keep me fit and healthy. The speed lock binding with axis gait efficiency technology sound amazing! Keeping my body fit, healthy, and aligned perfectly as I venture outdoors in the winter .. no matter how deep the Snow is! .Thanks for the chance ~ Keeping my fingers crossed! :)

  20. Michael January 13, 2013 at 3:51 pm #

I’d love to own these snowshoes because I never owned a pair before and they would come in very handy on winter hiking trips in Scotland.

  21. Jeff January 13, 2013 at 7:21 pm #

I want to win these snowshoes, since I recently moved up to northern NY (just south of the Canadian border), and want to be able to hike in all the snowy months, but do not have any snowshoes!

  22. Jeff January 13, 2013 at 7:58 pm #

My brother has been encouraging me for years to visit his Rocky Mountain home in winter. I always love to go in summer, but the winter climate at 8000 feet is a bit intimidating.

With a pair of MSR snowshoes to strap on my feet, perhaps I will be just courageous enough to give it a go.

  23. Sarah January 13, 2013 at 8:36 pm #

I snowshoed for the first time last year at a 5k hike to support breat cancer research. I love hiking and would love to continue through the winter since that is when I have the most “me” time. I live in New England so snowshoes are a must for winter hiking!!

  24. Craig Wohlleben January 13, 2013 at 8:54 pm #

Having recently read of the passing of the man MSR considers most responsible for the quality of their product, I thought I should finally explore the sport. Everything I have read says these are the best on the market. Who could want more or want to settle for less? I live in a state perfectly suited for these and would love to put them through their paces.

  25. Karl Gustafson January 13, 2013 at 9:09 pm #

Eager to summit Greylock via The Hopper Trail with my friends Bob and Theresa this winter!

  26. Karl Gustafson January 13, 2013 at 9:13 pm #

BTW I think the dates posted in the deadline are off. They seem to be from a 2012 calendar. :)

  27. Karen January 13, 2013 at 9:17 pm #

I love my Tubbs, but after watching people in their MSRs, I think they would benefit me. They are smaller and seem to have more gripping power. I might not have as many spectacular “slips,” but I can’t pass this up. I want to do more winter hiking, but honestly, with the snowshoes I have, it’s not happening. I teach teenagers, I need to be outside as often as possible or someone gets hurt.

  28. ADKinLA January 13, 2013 at 9:18 pm #

I am taking a wilderness course with snow travel and would love to have these bad boys to help get around in the snow!

  29. ShempGracie January 13, 2013 at 9:19 pm #

I want to win the snowshoes to snowshoe in the White Mountains. I rented them once and we did Artist’s Bluff. I would like to do that again.

  30. Jesse January 13, 2013 at 9:19 pm #

I take my kids snowshoeing at Mt. Rainier often and sometimes in the Olympic Mountains. It would be nice if I didn’t have to rent them!

  31. Angus January 13, 2013 at 9:22 pm #

Where do you want to snowshoe?
In my local mountains around Angeles National Forest and Big Bear area.

Who do you want to snowshoe with?
With anyone who can appreciate the challenge and adventure

    Why do you like snowshoeing?
I haven’t tried it yet but I do have a trip planned in a couple of weeks. It would be a bonus to win these so I don’t have to buy a pair!

    • Pennymonger January 13, 2013 at 10:25 pm #

I do some winter trail running competitions here in PA and these snow shoes would come in handy.

    • Rich January 13, 2013 at 10:59 pm #

I do most of my backpacking in Pennsylvania and that’s where I like to snowshoe also. I usually go solo but I’ve been trying to lure my wife into the fray.
I like snowshoeing because you can go where nobody dares to go/wants to go. The more snow the better.

  32. David H January 13, 2013 at 9:22 pm #

My snowshoes went missing. I would love to win these snowshoes for excursions in the Whites with my wife!

  33. Ben Fox January 13, 2013 at 9:24 pm #

    In college, want snowshoes.

  34. Amy Stach January 13, 2013 at 9:25 pm #

I would love to win these because I am eager to get into 10k and half marathon snowshoe running. Also doing some winter day hikes in the Rockies.

  35. Michael N January 13, 2013 at 9:27 pm #

I want a pair of snowshoes so i can backpack to Yosemite’s back country with my college friends. I’ve gone once in the past with rentals but with my own pair i can go out and have an challenging adventure whenever I please!

  36. Jeremy Love January 13, 2013 at 9:27 pm #

I’d like to win these snowshoes because I’d like to get outside more often during the winter season of New Hampshire.

  37. dbcooperisalive January 13, 2013 at 9:28 pm #

The most important aspect of this product is it is made in the great USA. I want it for this reason and only this reason.

  38. Jon M January 13, 2013 at 9:29 pm #

I want to snowshoe the North shore of lake superior an the BWCA in Minnesota. There’s usually too much snow to get here hiking in the winter, and the trails aren’t CC ski friendly so I’d like to get snowshoes to get out and winter camp with friends.

  39. manfred January 13, 2013 at 9:31 pm #

after the 18 inches of snow we got here in salt lake city. snowshoeing sounds like a blast to do on some trails.

  40. John Myers January 13, 2013 at 9:33 pm #

Always wanted try it but don’t have a pair…

  45. Justin January 13, 2013 at 10:02 pm #

I would like to do some snow shoeing around northern Minnesota. Possibly even the grasslands in North Dakota. It would be awesome to have a pair of snowshoes.

  46. Brad January 13, 2013 at 10:06 pm #

Why do I want to win these? Because I can’t fathom how 22″ is going to keep me and my ivernight gear afloat (and I’m only 165 lbs) so I am fascinated to see how the technology is so advanced with these.

  47. P.R. January 13, 2013 at 10:07 pm #

I’d like to go snowshoeing somewhere there’s snow.

  48. Matt January 13, 2013 at 10:07 pm #

I love to be outside in the winter! I always end up having to borrow a friend’s pair when we go out. This would sure help! Thanks!

  49. Tyler F January 13, 2013 at 10:10 pm #

I want to snowshoe around Orr, MN. There is usually a ton of snow and a lot of terrain to cover that would be immensely more difficult without snowshoes.

  50. Brad January 13, 2013 at 10:11 pm #

Oh, and as far as where? Dolly Sods wilderness in 3 weeks, or adirondacks later in Feb. and they would definitely go with me to Utah, the next time I venture out. Best powder I’ve ever seen.

  51. Evan Finley January 13, 2013 at 10:13 pm #

Where do you want to snowshoe?
I want to snowshoe around Minnesota, specifically in the Boundary Waters.

Who do you want to snowshoe with?
    With some friends from Scouts.

    Why do you like snowshoeing?
I like backpacking and they’re necessary for the winter.

  52. Michael Smith January 13, 2013 at 10:16 pm #

Where do you want to snowshoe?
Dolly Sods, West Virginia; White Mountains, New Hampshire

Who do you want to snowshoe with?
    My Boy Scout troop

    Why do you like snowshoeing?
The quiet winter serenity, sounds deadened by falling snow. At least when Scouts aren’t being Scouts. ;)

  53. John Corrigan January 13, 2013 at 10:19 pm #

I’ve had my current snowshoes for almost ten years, they’re nearly worn out. I don’t dare take them on a serious trek this winter for fear they’ll blow out!

  54. Steven Cooz January 13, 2013 at 10:26 pm #

I love going out cross country skiing, and have always wanted to get out on some snowshoes. I would love to do some winter backpacking in the BWCA and these would be a great way to get out and enjoy with friends.

  55. Joel Johnson January 13, 2013 at 10:30 pm #

I want to win these snowshoes because I have a dream of trekking through a snow-blanketed forest on a multi-day journey for QUIET!

  56. Casey Flom January 13, 2013 at 11:14 pm #

It would be awesome to sport a new smaller pair of snowshoes. 2 years ago I lost 60 lbs and no longer require 36″ snowshoes for shorter day trips!

  57. PNW_John January 13, 2013 at 11:18 pm #

I would like to win these snowshoes as I am tired of renting when I do get to go out in winter. Snowshoeing is currently not a big part of my winter activity and having a pair ready to go might increase my winter hiking here in the Cascades.

  58. ken krutt January 13, 2013 at 11:22 pm #

looking to upgrade to snowshoes with televators to tackle steeper terrain with these old legs!

  59. Steve January 13, 2013 at 11:33 pm #

I’d love to win a set of snow shoes! Since I live in New England, having a set would give me another option to go winter backpacking. They would definitely get some use!

  60. Trevor January 13, 2013 at 11:34 pm #

I only have 3 season hiking gear. I would love to start winter hiking, but don’t have the disposable income for the gear… If I win I would like to winter hike in the White Mountains without the bugs or the crowds ;)

  61. Rich January 13, 2013 at 11:42 pm #

I’ve just started hiking the NH 4K’s in Winter. These snowshoes would be a great upgrade. My feet toe out some so it would be nice to have snowhoes that can adjust for that rather than guessing each time I put them on (or trip over myself if I forget). And the easy to deploy climbing bars would make long steep ascents much easier.

  62. Steve Johnson January 14, 2013 at 12:00 am #

I have never owned a pair of snow shoes and only done a trek once at The Balsams when I stayed there a couple years back and tried it out. Loved it but never have the money to spend on snow shoes. I have 3 peaks left of the 48 4,000 footers but only hike Spring to Fall. I think these snow shoes could be the thing that finally gets me started into winter hiking! Thanks!

  63. Paul Osborn January 14, 2013 at 8:47 am #

I want to start snowshoeing with the wife and kids on some easy trails. Buying snowshoes for 6 people can take a dent out of the income.

    • Shawn A January 14, 2013 at 10:03 pm #

I recently saw snowshoes at Costco for about $30 each pair. Probably not the best quality but definitely cheap enough for kids to use!

  64. Earlylite January 14, 2013 at 10:33 am #

I just contacted the winner of the raffle – check your email inbox to see if you won!

    • Sean January 14, 2013 at 11:55 am #

        • Mike Hobbs January 14, 2013 at 12:08 pm #

          15 pairs of snowshoes? ;-)

        • Sean January 14, 2013 at 12:28 pm #

          Nice!

  65. billy bathgate January 14, 2013 at 2:36 pm #

I like to snowshoe on local peaks. Last rip was Roundtop peak.
