I spent the 4th of July in Austin, Texas, a town where most everyone has a “Keep Austin Weird” bumper sticker on their cars. I’ve been visiting with family for the past week and hanging out with my friends at Gossamer Gear, where I picked up a new Mariposa Plus to test in the 100 Mile Wilderness next month.
Yesterday morning I went with some friends to an annual neighborhood parade in one of Austin’s suburbs called Far West. They insisted that I check out the Ladies’ Lawn Chair Brigade and their unique percussive marching style and choreography. Very cool and just a little weird.
They were part of a small parade that featured the high school band, the local girl scout, cub scouts, and boy scouts, a few athletic clubs, a robotics club, and a procession of antique cars and home made floats. There were about 1,000 people who came to watch and we all said the pledge of allegiance together, sang the Star Spangled Banner, and America the Beautiful. I was really nice, simple, and a wonderful way to spend the 4th of July.

Theres just something so decadent about carrying a lawn chair about – so you can sit down at the least opportunity. Reminds me of how Morris Men often carry pewter tankards attached to their belt – so they can drink at any opportunity.
With a little duck tape they make an excellent pack frame.
Why didn’t I think of that!
