The Zealand Falls Hut is one of the easiest Appalachian Mountain Club huts to walk into, making it very popular with families and young children, and in summer it’s an easy 2.8 mile walk from the upper Zealand Road parking lot. Built in 1932, the hut sleeps a maximum of 36 guests, split across two 18 person bunk rooms.

Located next to Zealand Falls, the hut is located on the Appalachian Trail and with easy reach to Zeacliff, a picturesque viewpoint with views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, Mount Carrigain and the southern White Mountains.  More challenging hikes are also available to nearby Zealand Mountain (round trip 4.8 miles), Mount Hale (round trip 5.0 miles) and famous Bondcliff, Mount Bond, and West Bond (round trip 13.4 miles.)

In winter, the hut is open on a self service basis from mid-October through the end of May and is used by cross-country skiers, snowshoers and peakbaggers to avoid having to camp outdoors in the frigid White Mountain winter. Winter rates are about 60% lower than the rest of the year (about $38/night for members), so this is a good time to stay at the huts if the high prices of the regular season have deterred you in the past.

When staying at a self-service hut, guests provide their own food and have full use of the hut kitchen and dining are. Although heated, the Zealand hut is chilly in winter and guests should bring warm clothing to wear indoors and a zero degree sleeping bag for sleeping in.

For more information about for rates and availability, contact the Appalachian Mountain Club. Winter reservations are recommended.

  1. I spent several nights there about 30 years ago. It's surprising how warm the main room of the hut can be when the wood stove is going. The bunk rooms are cold — but not as cold as Carter's…

  2. I was going to give it a go this winter. It's a lot more affordable in winter and sets me up for a go at the winter Bonds.

  3. if only they'd get rid of their anti-dog policies…

    • Very selfish of you not to not think if the human paying customers with severe allergies to pets. If that ever happens, i hope AMC is smart enough to charge for them as they’ll be losing lots of customers.

  4. Try the Randolph Mountain Club Huts on Adams. Crag Camp – which is awesome – permits dogs. I stayed there this year, overlooking King Ravine.

  5. awesome, thanks for the info!
