Autumn Memories – Hiking Dreams

Autumn is a beautiful time to day hike and backpack in New England and with the official end of summer last week, I took a few hours to sift through my photo library and pull out photos of my favorite falls trips in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts.

Looking at these photos really helps jog my memory of those walks: when the light of the day seems to emanate from the trees and ground rather than the sky; when the morning air is as cool and crisp as a freshly picked apple, the evenings are cool and suddenly dark, and the taste of hot ramen noodles warms me to my core. Autumn in New England.

Afterward: This post is dedicated to my father who passed away earlier this year. Today would have been his 91st birthday. I will be thinking about him today while I’m hiking. Autumn was his favorite season.

  1. such clarity in all these pics…

  2. Too close to actually vote for one….. Half a vote for Mt Webster and half a vote for Autumn pond. I actually really like 8 of these, but I figured voting for an 8 way tie would annoy the heck out of everyone.

  3. They are all great, but my favorite is autumn pond. Beautiful!

  4. They’re all great shots! If I had to choose, 1st-Driftwood,2nd-Mount Webster, 3rd Marsh.
    What’s your camera?

  5. Autumn is my favorite time to hike also. Love the smell of the falling leaves, and the cool crisp wind.

  6. I’m jonesing to go backpacking so bad after seeing these pics… Love the driftwood one.

  7. Screw Auger and the Bigelow photos are my favorite two, but they’re all excellent photos. I third the jonesing on the backpacking. Wanna go NOW!

  8. Screw Auger Falls. We just don’t have anything like that in east Texas

  9. Love all the photos.
Was out on Osceola and East Osceola yesterday with my wife and our dog and it was a very similar scene and beautiful.

What I really like however was your footnote to your father.

    It’s my favorite season too.
Great that you have the association of him and this incredible scenery.

  10. Great photos. My top 3 are Screw Auger Falls, Autumn Ponds and Driftwood. They make you want to get out there now.

  11. Superb. Taking lots of photos does get results. But the landscape gives the content. I miss New England.

  12. They are all awesome in many different way. I’m voting for Autumn Pond, Adirondacks (NY), the name says it all. The photo reminds me of many autumn cool mornings spent in the forest.

    Thanks for sharing

  13. Looks like an amazing trip. Fall hiking is my favorite as well.

I just got back (not quite fall yet), from some hiking in Georgia at Raven Cliffs Falls, which was enjoyable.

My condolences on the passing of your father, I know how that feels.
