Maine is for Mushrooms

I saw the coolest looking mushrooms on the Maine Appalachian Trail this year, but I’m having trouble identifying what kind they are. Care to give me a hand? Leave a comment if you know their names, or if you’d like to make a plausible name up! It’s Friday!

Fluted Muchrooms
Chanterelle Mushrooms
Tendrils
Spindle Coral Mushroms
Orange Mushrooms
Fading Scarlet Waxy Cap Mushrooms
Lobster Claw Mushrooms
I think these are called Lobster Claw Mushrooms....

  1. Cool pics! WE sure don't get anything like that in the southwest.

  2. There are mushrooms everywhere in Maine. The place is a virtual rain forest and fungus has a field day. These examples really caught my eye though. Those tendril things are my favorite.

  3. Phillip- I bought a laminated fold out mushroom card for identifying such cool looking shrooms. It doesn't have all the shrooms, but has most of the more common ones

    your photos

    1-Chanterella

    2-Spindle Coral

    3- Fading Scarlet Waxy (Ithink)

    4- I don't know

Anyway, I bought this pocket guide and will be carrying it with me this fall so I can ID shrooms

it's called Mushrooms, an introduction to familiar North American species, by Waterford Press. It's about 4×9-inches and laminated folds out to about 22×9-inches. $5.95

  4. Awesome JJ- I'll update the photo captions. Thank you so much!

You made me remember about folding card on my desk (under a pile). Doh! I have the Pocket Naturalist Guide – Mushrooms: An Introduction to Familiar North American Species<img src="https://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&l=as2&o=1&a=1583551824&camp=217145&creative=399369" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> which has everything you've listed except what the 4th one.

  5. Cool looking mushrooms indeed! Will keep my eyes open when I do one of those Sedona trails. Might find some cool-looking fungus as well. LOL.

the tree is located toward the beginning of the spirit pond trail and about 200 feet from spirit pond at the site of an old homestead and near the spirit pond burial ground. the tree fell over in 2015 but still grows hen of the woods mushroom from the remaining stump, around the stump and from the base of the fallen tree itself in huge numbers and size.

Where to find the second most productive hen of the woods oak tree in maine is at the Center Pond Phippsburg land trust trail in Phippsburg maine.

this tree is easily accessed and so the hen of the woods go quickly. if you’re the lucky one to get a 15 pound hen of the woods from this tree, you’ll understand why it’s called the “dancing mushroom.”

  7. Chicken of the Woods Locations at Spirit Pond Phippsburg Maine

There are also huge amounts of chicken of the woods mushrooms near the same trail locations growing on old and fallen oak trees. They grow randomly between mid June through the end of October, with fall production being the greatest from September through October. Honey mushrooms are also found frequently at the same oak locations in October on the dead oaks and on the roots of living oaks.
