MLD PRO SILPOLY SEAM SEALING

COST: $45
WEIGHT: .5- 1.0 oz | 15-30 gm

The SilPoly version of this tarp requires seam sealing, which is why we include seam sealer with all our SilPoly and SilNylon shelters. You can seam seal this tarp yourself in about 30 minutes with the supplied seam sealer OR as an extra service we can do it for you!

We use a diluted 100% Silicone Sealer on the exterior stitching above the lower hem. Factory seam sealing can add about 1 week to the order process. Seam sealing adds about .5oz | 30 gm +/- depending on the shelter size.

Factory sealed shelters are returnable under the regular return policy, where as DYI seam sealing is not returnable.

We STRONGLY suggest you pitch the shelter and test before a trip. Set up before a good rain or spray with a garden hose nozzle arching up in the air and down on the shelter simulating rain for at least 15min. Touch up or resealing may be needed eventually.

NOTE: DCF shelters do not need seam sealing.

Stakes

COST: $28

Add EIGHT 6″ Ti Skewer Stakes

MLD 2.7 MM PRO REFLECTO GUYLINE

COST: $6
WEIGHT: 2.9 oz | 82 gm

This product includes 40′ of our regular, non-reflective Pro Guyline in your choice of Yellow or OD Green. You can upgrade this to 50′ of 2.7 MM Reflecto Pro Guyline which has properly spaced reflective markers that are bright enough to see, without making your shelter look like that obnoxious house on your block with the out-of-control Christmas lights.

Each of our SilPoly and SilNylon shelters comes with one tube of McNett Sil-Net Seam Sealer. It is STRONGLY recommended you use this supplied seam sealer to seal and strengthen the seams of your shelter.**DCF (Dyneema® Composite Fabric A.K.A. Cuben Fiber) Shelters do not need seam sealed.**

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Pitch and inspect your shelter for any issues. Once it is seam sealed, it is non-returnable except for significant defects.
2. Use the supplied SilNet Sealer and ONLY the SilNet Sealer. (If you want to dilute it or use some other silicone sealant it should work OK and is common (research this yourself online) but, you are on your own- results may vary and are not covered by warranty! If you go this route, it is assumed you know 100% what you are doing and have done it before!!!)
3. Pitch the shelter tightly. Temperatures should be above 60 F and humidity below 80%. You may do this indoors. You may also do one seam at a time indoors if the seam is stretched slightly. Pinning one seam from each end on the floor between two heavy objects works OK.
4. We use the SilNet straight from the tube. Do not make a big hole in the sealer tube – start small so that you can control flow. Multiple small application is a lot better than one big smear.
5. Main Seams: Place a small bead on the seam along the stitching. Work on a 3’- 4’ section at a time. Use a finger to press the sealer into the stitching and the small valley at the edge of the seam where it is rolled under.

ALLOW AT LEAST 24 HOURS TO FULLY DRY.

NOTE: You only need to seal the OUTSIDE of the shelter. You do not need to seal the bottom perimeter roller edge stitching. It is OK to add a small bead on the leading edge of the triangle tie-outs reinforcement stitching, but it is not required.

SPECIAL AREAS: Add a little sealer to any tie-out stitching on the middle of a panel (Mids, Cricket, and SuperTarps). Seal the zipper storm flap stitching and tie-outs on the Mids. Seal the stitching and apex tie-outs areas on the Mids, Crickets, and TrailStars.

IMPORTANT: Do no go back and forth over the wet seam too much – after a minute or three it will get gummy and look bad; it is better to wait for 8 hrs and then add some over any area you missed.

  1. Tom Bierman

The original cat cut a-frame tarp. I love it! Best quality sil-nylon gear out there.

  2. Tom Sweet (verified owner)

I’ve been playing with this tarp for a week and I love it. I got the .5 cuben version and it is even lighter than the website says. Super easy to get a taut pitch with the cut and bigger than I thought. I left the tarp up in my yard during a Florida thunderstorm and it did wonderful. I would trust this on my next trip. MLD quality is outstanding!

  3. Eric

One of my favorite pieces of gear. The cut is elegant and very easy to get taut. It’s super versatile and you can pitch it in a number of ways depending on your sleeping site conditions. I’ve slept in very windy and wet conditions and it performed beautifully.

  4. Leto Atreides (verified owner)

I received a larger prototype of this tarp in May of 2017. After taping the seams this tarp kept us dry in a full night of moderate rain in little Yosemite valley and during a torrential downpour near Aspen. Very light weight, spacious, and easy to pitch once you get the hang of it. We also used this tarp as a floor sheet for a cowboy camp on the beach, and it performed excellently at this function as well. There were no signs of abrasion or stitching failing despite being laid out over coarse sand and driftwood. Excellent product and great customer service by MLD.

  5. Wren

Amazing Tarp! I took this to Iceland to hike the Laugavegur/Fimmvörðuháls trail and it performed beautifully in high winds and constant rain. It takes a little bit of practice to set it up properly and you do have to pay attention to the weather and campsite to achieve ideal set up, but I have found it to can be extremely cozy and comfortable, and I now prefer this tarp to any tent I’ve owned.

  6. Mateo

A bought mine 3 years ago. I came back today to see the weight cause I couldn’t remember and lo and behold my photo of this gem is on the featured pics for the website! That’s Vee Lake in September. I am still using the same tarp and I can only say it’s awesome! Rugged yet light. I keep it stored inside my house so that probably helps. Super easy to set up and adjust.

  7. Blake Robinson

A fantastic tarp! I have used my MLD SilNylon Grace Duo easily 250 nights and it’s still going strong. Nice and big. For my record rain and heat filled AT thru-hike I paired it with an inner-net similar to the MLD serenity bugnet shelter and found the shelter to be the best I’ve ever owned in terms of lack of condensation, breathability, and the absolute nicest for hot weather to stay as cool as possible. And I’ve tried a TON (being 6’4″ does drastically limit my choices though). Downsides: not having any protection on the front and rear of your shelter can get a bit wet sometimes, but it’s worth it, even in hot and wet conditions. When it starts getting into the 20s though, things can get maybe too drafty. Fun to set up the tarp for lunch if it’s raining, fun to set up in general once you get used to it.

I have the Grace Duo Tarp in 0.75 DCF. Ron was incredibly helpful explaining the differences between MLD’s tarps before purchasing. This product has been fantastic at keeping me dry and shielded from the elements with over 30 nights of use along the PCT in Washington through snow, sleet, rain, and wind. The DCF material retains minimal condensation and dries out quickly in the sun. Best of all, it weighs practically nothing (7.7 oz including linelocs). The DUO is plenty wide for one person plus gear, and could comfortably fit two if necessary. My only caveat is that the user needs to understand how to pitch an A-frame tarp in relation to the wind, as well as how to select a good campsite. This is my first tarp and I can genuinely say tarp camping has made my backcountry experiences more meaningful and improved my connection with my surrounding environment.

  9. Nicholas Spindler (verified owner)

I’m new to tarp camping, but I wanted an MLD Grace Tarp for three reasons:

-It looked easy to set up and pitch
    -The website looked good
-The customer feedback and reviews are unanimous in their praise for the quality of the craftsmanship.

I have to say, MLD have exceeded my expectations on in every area!

Great communication from MLD who have so much knowledge and experience.

I have got a great, taught pitch every time I use this tarp and it will be my go to shelter from now on!

I got bright orange…not so good for stealth camping, but a fantastic colour!

    Thanks MLD – Highly Recommend!

  10. Victor Trevisanut (verified owner)

I love this tarp! I used it for my John Muir Trail thru hike in 2017. It withstood rain and high winds without issues. I love how versatile it is. I would highly recommend getting some type of mesh netting to keep bugs out in the summer. Highly Recommend.

  11. Jason Downs

I love the MLD Grace Duo Tarp! It is light and strong and well thought out. I have peace of mind when I use it because I know it is well made with great materials. I confidently take it out in harsh Aussie conditions.
