Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp Review
The Black Diamond Spot 400 headlamp is a dependable, feature-rich headlamp designed for hikers, climbers, campers, and backpackers who need reliable hands-free illumination. Building on the long history of the Spot series, the Spot 400 delivers brightness and durability while maintaining a compact, comfortable design. With dual power compatibility and multiple lighting modes, this headlamp does a good job of meeting the needs of both casual outdoor users and hardcore adventurers.

Brightness and Beam Quality
One of the most critical factors in choosing a headlamp is light output, and the Black Diamond Spot 400 delivers impressive performance for its size. With a maximum output of 400 lumens, it offers plenty of brightness for nighttime hiking, early morning trail starts, and camp chores after dark. At higher settings, the beam extends up to 100 meters ahead, allowing confident navigation of rocky trails or forest paths. This ability to see far into the distance is especially important for winter hiking, when many hikes start before the sun rises and finish after it sets.
The Spot 400 includes both spot and flood lighting modes, allowing users to tailor the beam to their needs. The spot beam provides focused illumination for seeing down the trail, while the flood beam spreads light evenly for close-range tasks like cooking, organizing gear, or reading a map.
Dual Power Technology: Rechargeable and AAA Battery Compatibility
A standout feature of the Black Diamond Spot 400 headlamp is its dual power system. Users can power the headlamp with standard AAA alkaline or lithium batteries or with the optional Black Diamond BD 1500 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is a significant benefit, especially for those who spend long periods outdoors or travel to areas without easy access to charging.
For short trips or daily use, a rechargeable battery is convenient and environmentally friendly. It charges via USB and eliminates the need to buy disposable batteries constantly. For longer backcountry trips, the ability to swap in AAA batteries provides peace of mind, ensuring the headlamp remains usable even when charging options are limited.
Unfortunately, the rechargeable battery is not packaged with the Spot 400, which smacks of bait-and-switch; being able to buy the complete product at once would be so much better and less confusing for consumers. It’s worth noting that the Petzl Actik Core (625 lumens) provides dual power capabilities out of the box, so you can use either power source without an adapter, which is how I think the Spot 400 should be packaged in the future. In other words, it should genuinely be a dual-power headlamp out of the box, not one that is just dual-power-capable, requiring you to buy the separate rechargeable battery.
Lighting Modes and Controls
The Spot 400 offers multiple lighting modes, improving its overall usability. In addition to white light, it includes a red night-vision mode. Red light is especially useful for preserving night vision and avoiding blinding others in camp on the other side of the campfire.
It also features an intuitive dimming mode, a strobe light, and a digital lock to prevent accidental battery drain, making it a must-have for hikers and backpackers. The control sequence between these different functions and modes is also easy to figure out by experimentation, even if you haven’t used the headlamp for some time. The headlamp also features brightness memory, which allows it to turn on at the last-used setting, and has buttons that are easy to operate even with thin glove liners on, making the headlamp practical for cold-weather use.
Comfort and Fit: Lightweight Design for Extended Wear
Comfort can make or break a headlamp, and the Black Diamond Spot 400 performs well in this area. The adjustable headband is soft, stretchy, and sits comfortably against the forehead without causing pressure points. It stays in place during movement, whether hiking uphill, scrambling over rocks, or setting up camp. The headlamp housing tilts smoothly, allowing users to aim the light precisely where it is needed. At just 2.5 ounces without batteries, the Spot 400 is light enough for extended wear.
Durability and Waterproof Rating
The Spot 400 is designed to withstand demanding outdoor environments. It carries an IPX8 waterproof rating, meaning it can handle heavy rain and even brief submersion without damage. This level of waterproofing adds confidence when using the headlamp in unpredictable weather or in wet environments such as alpine terrain or river crossings. The housing materials are robust, and the overall construction suggests long-term durability. The buttons are firm and responsive, and the battery compartment seals tightly and opens easily.
Battery Life and Performance
Battery life on the Black Diamond Spot 400 depends primarily on brightness settings, external temperature, the freshness of your batteries, and the chosen power source. The headlamp includes a power indicator that shows remaining battery life, helping users plan ahead and avoid unexpected shutdowns.
On lower modes, the headlamp offers extended runtime (200+ hours) on low, making it suitable for multiple nights of camping use. However, it only provides single-digit burn times (5-8 hours) on medium or higher modes. While higher brightness levels naturally consume more power, the Spot 400 is clearly optimized for camp use and not night hiking, which requires significantly longer burn times.
Final Verdict
The Black Diamond Spot 400 is a versatile, dependable headlamp well-suited to a wide range of outdoor activities; three-season hikers and backpackers will value its balance of 400 lumens of brightness, low weight, multiple power options, and weather resistance, while campers and travelers will find it reliable for evening tasks, campsite use, and emergencies. Although users who need extended long distance illumination or multi-hour runtimes should opt for a headlamp with a larger lithium-ion battery, the Spot 400 offers more than enough performance for most recreational outdoor users; its dual-power capability, comfortable fit, and strong waterproof rating make the Spot 400 a user-friendly choice that adapts to different trip lengths and conditions and delivers consistent performance where it matters most.

Phil – thanks for yet another excellent round of reviews. I recently found one of these BD Spot 400 models on the trail (had 3 AAA in it) and thought I hit it big. Really love the ergonomics of this headlamp – button is usable with gloves, the headband is a bit slimmer than many others, very simple toggling between the two white lights and the red. However, you hit on one of the drawbacks (separate purchase for the rechargeable battery), but what bugs me about this model is that the rechargeable battery doesn’t have a USB charging port, necessitating the purchase of a charging cradle as well). I see that REI currently has a charger plus battery combo at a reasonable price (which wasn’t available to me when I purchased both the BD1500 battery and its charging cradle separately for about $40. I typically use either the 400-lumen white light or the red light, and can vouch for the significant battery drain from the 400-lumen setting. Also, it seems to take much longer to recharge than my Petzl Tikka’s rechargeable battery. BTW, the Petzl Tikka lpriducts I’ve seen also don’t include the rechargeable battery (though they do include the 3 AAA batteries).
This is reminiscent of the quest for my nephew’s headlamp — i was looking for something where the headlamp IS the charging cradle for 3X regular/chargeable triple-a cells. Not common — one less thing to sell, and risk or mismatched compatibility in the field, hot diggity! I have an older p.actic plus a backup keychain.
