REI Campwell Fleece Pullover Review

REI Campwell Fleece Pullover Review

The REI Co-op Campwell Fleece Pullover is a heavyweight fleece sweater that sits neatly between a cozy casual layer and a capable technical midlayer. REI positions it as an everyday piece designed for comfort, but the Campwell’s construction, fit, and features let it pull double duty for outdoor activities that need warmth, mobility, and quick-drying performance.

Fit and styling

The Campwell has a vintage look: a pullover with a half-zip, stand collar, and a boxy, baggy silhouette. It’s cut so large that you might consider sizing down a full size because the thing is enormous. REI sent me a size large to review, and it feels even larger than an XL. While you can technically wear the Campwell Fleece Pullover as a midlayer under a shell, I view it as a more casual piece, perfect for lounging on the sofa on a frosty Sunday or walking the dog around the block on a brisk winter day.

The fleece has elastic cords at the hips to adjust the fit and handwarmer pockets that close with snaps.

Materials and construction

The Campwell uses a mid-to-heavy-weight synthetic fleece that is soft on the inside with a slightly smoother face. It’s warm for its weight and breathes better than heavy pile fleeces, so it’s comfortable for moderate activity.  The half-zip has a modest, easy-to-grab pull, but lacks a zipper garage to keep your chin protected. Because the fleece is synthetic, it dries quickly and resists the damp-related heat loss that natural fibers can suffer.

The Campwell has two large handwarmer pockets that secure with snaps to hold content, but there’s no passthrough between them like a true kangaroo pocket. The cuffs have a little stretch, but enough to pull them up your forearms to cool off, while the elastic hip cords on both sides let you seal out drafts from below.

Performance: casual and technical

Casual: As a top for cooler weather, the Campwell shines. It’s soft and comfortable against the skin, holds heat well for walking around town or running errands, and layers nicely under high-volume coats. The look is neutral enough for family gatherings and casual settings where a full technical jacket would look out of place. I don’t particularly like the beige color combo reviewed here, but prefer the teal, black, and purple models, which are a lot more fun.

Technical: For outdoor activity, the Campwell functions best as a midlayer or standalone on cool, dry days. Its breathability allows moderate hiking at a leisurely to moderate pace and general backcountry use without trapping too much sweat. When paired under a lightweight waterproof/breathable shell, it provides reliable insulation while allowing moisture to escape. However, it is not windproof or highly water-resistant; in sustained wet weather, you’ll need an outer shell.

Features

  • Half-zip: quick venting for good temperature regulation.
  • Backsides of the forearms have a nylon overlay to resist wear and tear at elbows and cuffs
  • Two hand pockets: snaps keep items secure, and the pockets are positioned for comfortable hand warming.
  • Clean hem and cuffs: minimal bulk and good compatibility with outer layers.
  • Simple design: no excess tech features, like pit zips or a hood

Care and durability

Treat it like other synthetic fleeces: wash it in cold water with your regular detergent and dry it on medium or high with the rest of your clothes. This is my opinion, despite what REI advises, so your mileage may vary. Fleece pullovers are virtually indestructible and last forever.

Bottom-line

The REI Co-op Campwell Fleece Pullover is a comfortable but oversized midweight fleece that successfully straddles casual and technical use. It’s ideal for someone who wants a soft, attractive pullover for everyday wear that can also serve as a practical midlayer for lounging, travel, and other outdoor activities. If you need a highly technical, weatherproof shell or a fleece optimized for extreme athletic movement, this isn’t the specialized piece for that niche.
