Design and Fit

The Rab Vital Windshell features a sleek, minimalist design that prioritizes functionality. It has a streamlined cut that fits close to the body without being restrictive, allowing for a full range of movement. This makes it suitable for activities such as hiking, climbing, and trail running, where agility is important. The jacket is lightweight (5 oz in a Men’s XL) and packs down small, making it easy to carry in a backpack.

The one-way adjustable hood has a rear velcro volume control that fits well over a hat, providing additional wind protection without limiting visibility. The hood has an elastic opening and features a bendable brim wire to keep rain off your face, a premium feature that is now almost unheard of on outdoor jackets in this era of minimalism. The cuffs are elasticated to keep the wind out, and the hem has an adjustable drawcord to seal out drafts effectively.

Two zippered hand-warmer pockets provide secure storage, while a strap along the front zipper snaps across the opening, allowing you to vent the torso while keeping the zipper undone. While the hardwarmer pockets aren’t really designed for it, the jacket is also easily stuffed in a pocket in between uses.

Materials and Construction

The Rab Vital Windshell is made from tightly woven 20D nylon with a PFAS-free DWR coating for water resistance, and it is windproof and breathable. The super-fine yarns in the tight weave enhance wind protection beyond that of standard nylons while remaining soft. YKK zippers are used on the central zipper and hand warmer pockets for added reliability.

Performance

The Vital Windshell excels at blocking wind, which makes a significant difference in cold or exposed environments. Even in strong gusts, the jacket keeps you warm by preventing cold air from penetrating through the fabric. This windproof capability is particularly valuable when combined with layering systems, as it allows you to retain core body heat without overheating.

Water resistance is limited, so it will not keep you dry in heavy rain, but it does shed light drizzle and mist effectively.

  1. I love this windshell for low levels of activity – gentle strolls with friends, shopping, etc – but it gets too sweaty as soon as I start exerting more effort. The breathability really isn’t up to much. I use a Mountain Equipment Aerofoil if I’m backpacking / doing any hard hiking. The breathability is much better – but it also doesn’t block as much wind, so it’s colder.

    1. Definitely a heavier wind shirt, but superb for cooler spring, autumn, or winter conditions when layered over polartec alpha. And the price is fantastic. I got this for $80 at Backcountry.com.
