Outdoor Herbivore Vegan Backpacking Meals

Outdoor Herbivore

I discovered a new cottage backpacking food company a few weeks ago called Outdoor Herbivore. You should check them out, especially if you’re on a vegetarian or vegan diet.

I tried two of their meals last weekend on a section hike and they were pretty good. Not too sweet, good weight to calorie density, and both had a satisfyingly crunchy taste and mouth feel.

The two meals I tried were their signature dish, Apple Quinoa Oatmeal (4.9 oz/600 calories) and Sunny Sunflower Salad (3.6 oz/470 calories), which makes a good cold lunch.

Both contain Quinoa, pronounced KEEN-WAH, which is a very high protein grain (12-18%). It’s also gluten free for people who require a special diet.

Those of you who are vegetarian, or vegan, or just prefer to eat clean know that it can be difficult to maintain a balanced diet with enough protein on the trail. Quinoa provides a very versatile solution to boosting your protein and I think it’s exciting to see a vegetarian backpacking meal company basing it’s menu around it.

Disclosure: The author owns this product and purchased it using their own funds.

If you’ve tried any of Outdoor Herbivore’s meals before, please leave a comment with your recommendations.

  1. You'll like them. The nutty flavor is very different but adds great variety to the food bag. The owner appears to do a pretty good business supplying AT thru-hikers via mail drops.

  2. Thanks for this tip. I was looking for veg. recipes but I am excited to check out some high-nutrition prepackaged options!

  3. I was out for a week using these meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I thought all of them were winners except for the egg meal. I’d buy all of them again except that one.
